The Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation is established Extraordinary Gazette No.1933/13 dated 21st September 2015 and Amended Extraordinary Gazette No. 1945/41 dated 18th December 2015 as an important Cabinet level Ministry to promote unity, reconciliation, brotherhood, sisterhood among different ethnic, religious and communities among regions for the prosperity of the country.

The Ministry initiatives are focused to build long term peace and stability; manage tension in societies; reducing risks of future conflicts; ensuring principle of the human rights are upheld; assume leadership roles for peace building  and National Reconciliation; formulating policies, strategies and programmes to build a harmonious society and co-ordinate the implementation of National Integration and Reconciliation road map.

The Ministry is headed by H.E the President Maithripala Sirisena as the Minister of National Integration and Reconciliation, Hon. A. H. M. Fowzie is the State Minister of National Integration and Reconciliation and Mr. V. Sivagnanasothy serves as the Secretary to the Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation.

This Ministry builds as inclusive society which respects and values diversity while promoting unity through Sri Lankan identity. The concept of Unity in Diversity is an important theme of the Ministry. Ministry undertaken many programmes such as;

  • Integration friendly schools programme
  • Institutionalizing reconciliation into religious school teaching
  • Integration friendly media and peace journalism
  • District Reconciliation Committees (DRC) to resolve religious and ethnic tensions
  • Integration friendly universities and youth programmes
  • National Reconciliation policy and policy on durable solutions.
  • Reconciliation Focused Economic Empowerment Project
  • Reconciliation focused dedicated T.V Channel
  • Reconciliation focused healing and reparation programme
  • Partner and collaborate with Secretariat for Coordinating Reconciliation Mechanisms (SCRM) to implement transitional justice reconciliation mechanism.
  • EU supported social cohesion reconciliation programme and GIZ memorialization programme
  • Oversee monitoring and evaluate work of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR)
  • Monitoring all LLRC recommendations
  • Formulate and implementation 50,000 brick and mortar type housing programme for the conflict affected families in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
  • Implementation of Roads and infrastructure facilities for all the conflict affected Northern and Eastern communities.
  • Closely work with the Northern and Eastern Provinces Development Communities and facilitate urgent and important issues and problems.
